Applewood Physiotherapy and our paediatric patients

Children’s physiotherapy is definitely one of our favourite things here in Applewood Physiotherapy.  At Applewood Physiotherapy and Pilates we have years of experience working with children requiring early intervention for neurological conditions and developmental delays. Paediatric physiotherapists have specialist training, skills and knowledge of child development and childhood conditions. Eilis has worked extensively with children’s disability services since 2016 and continues to work with children with complex needs, alongside her other work in clinic and in the wider Greystones community.

Paediatric physiotherapists are movement specialists -they are experts in identifying the movement needs of babies and young children. Paediatric physios help babies to achieve their developmental milestones. They can identify difficulties with gross motor skills and teach parents how to participate with the child to meet their developmental milestones through play and fun activities. Paediatric physiotherapists also help children with biomechanical  and sports injuries.

Paediatric physiotherapists can

·        assess a child’s musculoskeletal system and identify any areas in need of development.

·        help children recover from illness and work towards achieving functional goals

·        identify should a child need to be referred to another medical professional to help with other areas

·        help the caregiver and the child focus on an active and healthy lifestyle

Assessment

Treatment given by a paediatric physiotherapist is based on an accurate assessment of the child followed by an individual treatment programme. This treatment programme includes explanation and instructions to the child (as appropriate) and to the parent / caregiver.
