What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

VRT is undertaken by a Chartered Physiotherapist who has completed training in this speciality.

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a specialised form of therapy intended to alleviate problems caused by vestibular disorders, primarily vertigo and dizziness, gaze instability, and/or imbalance and falls. A customized exercise plan is developed from the findings of the clinical assessment and input from clients.

VRT is also used by athletes to improve their ability to track a ball and complete complex movements such as jumping to catch a high ball. Irish international rugby player Keith Earls uses VRT to increase his accuracy.

Evidence has shown that vestibular rehabilitation can be effective in improving symptoms related to many vestibular – inner ear – disorders as well as improving field sport players abilities.

Symptoms due to vestibular disorders can diminish quality of life by making a person feel nauseous and dizzy, it can be very debilitating and lead to fear of leaving the house. As a result, decreased muscle strength and flexibility, increased joint stiffness, and reduced stamina can occur. Treatment strategies used in rehabilitation can also be beneficial for these problems.

Assessment can be done at our clinic and begins with a clinical assessment, collecting a detailed history of the patient’s symptoms and how these symptoms affect their daily lives.

A customised exercise plan is then developed.

An important part of the VRT is to establish an exercise program that can be performed regularly and easily at home. As with all rehabilitation, compliance with the home exercise program is essential to help achieve your goals.
